Capstone Short Film

Artist Statement:
I want to focus on producing an intimate character driven story. This short film follows a young girl named Dawn who is navigating life as a homeless student and eventually finds solace in her professor. We, privileged enough to live comfortably, often undermine how lucky we are. I was inspired by a student that I used to see lingering in a lounge room next to where my French class was held. I wasn’t sure of his situation, but it got me thinking about what his story could be. This narrative came about from a place of curiosity and wanting to shed light on the struggles of those often overlooked in society. I want to touch on themes of isolation, being afraid to reach out for support, abandonment issues and perseverance. I hope to bring to life my creativity through the cinematography and set a tone that encompasses all of these themes. Through minimal dialogue, choice of music, and visuals, I want to capture a story that appeals to ethos allowing for a more immersive experience. My goal is to have the audience empathize with the main character and think about how everyone around them, although seemingly doing well, could be going through something. I want it to be understood how a small helping hand can go a long way. I hope that through the societal issues this film addresses, people will be inspired to reflect.
Also partially inspired by quote from "Aftersun":
"Well, like... Sometimes at playtime, I look up at the sky and if I can see the Sun then... I think that the fact that we can both see the Sun, so even though we're not actually in the same place and we're not actually together... we kind of are in a way, you know? Like we're both underneath the same sky, so... kind of together."
